Discussion:
[seam-dev] Git Migration of Seam2

Hi Seam devs,

I am looking for target of migrated Seam 2 repository from SVN to GIT
on github.com. Just to inform you, we already have prepared migrated
sources, but need to do final steps.

I don't think that current https://github.com/seam is good for that as
it is more likely about Seam 3.

I don't have any experience with creating a new organization on
github.com. Even I feel it would be the best way, your
voice/opinions/help to find a proper github.com target is important.

So please give me some attention with that question ;-).

Cheers,

I don't see a problem with having it located at github.com/seam, this is
the most obvious/intuitive place to locate the code. How about we use
https://github.com/seam/legacy ?

I think github/seam/seam2 makes more sense, or even just a whole new seam2 organization.

I don't think legacy give any info as to what the repo actually contains.

+1 to github.com/seam2
Having it as a separate organization will keep things like permissions
better. Even if you just have one repo.

I would not call it as legacy, if we agree to add there then just bring
the known name jboss-seam - no rename please ;-)

Denis,

SVN repo stays as it is now, it won't be deleted! Right now all contributors to Seam 2.3 prefer GIT over SVN.

GIT has many advantages, it was written many articles/blogs about it, so I won't be repeating them.

I have already used git-svn daily for local mirroring of SVN into my GIT repository from early days of creating Seam 2.3 branch. And believe me thanks to non standard SVN branch layout, but not only for that, I have regularly hard times when release comes (creating a tag and checking out is long time task). I won't write about easy branching and other sweet features of GIT. What is more important I think that taking down the SVN barrier will bring new contributors to Seam2. But if not, it will definitely make easier life current committers.

Seam 2 has got now https://github.com/seam2/jboss-seam ?epository from
today.

SVN branch https://svn.jboss.org/repos/seam/branches/community/Seam_2_3/
is considered now as LEGACY repository for Seam 2.x.

The repository has got all branches migrated with full history for Seam 2.x.

Whoever from previous contributors would like to be a member of
https://github.com/seam2?tab=members, let me know in private email, I
will add him.
